ARTIFACTS

Classroom Website

3a and 3d

I created a GoogleClassroom for my second graders. I posted assignments and current events on the classroom stream. The stream was open for students to view, interact with, and comment on. Each student had a secure username and login. They were taught the importance of privacy and that anything that occurs under that log in is their responsibility. Most often students logged in and clicked on the assigned link and then did the activity provided. For many of my students this was their first time on a Chromebook and first time interacting with technology outside of an app or streaming service. The students were highly invested. I wanted their opinions and provided them with an opportunity to have an online presence in a safe monitored environment. The students were most often allowed access as a whole group but occasionally had time independently.  They also had opportunities to share their work with their peers and other staff members in the building to receive feedback and practice positive digital identity.

Media Literacy Essay

3b

In this essay I looked at an actual experience that occurred in my classroom. My second graders and I had been researching chameleons and had read conflicting information about why chameleons change color. My students automatically believed in the facts they had heard most recently without questioning the validity of the sources. The essay suggests that teachers in elementary school should take on the responsibility of teaching students media literacy. The essay discusses the importance and need of media literacy in the classroom. The essay ends with what steps I took to practice media literacy as a class. In the end, as a class, we examined our resources and took further steps to find the most accurate information. In other words: as a class we learned the importance of media literacy.

Tech Contract

3c and 3d

This contract was designed for my second grade students. It was designed to keep them safe and to practice responsible and respectful online habits. The contract was gone over in class in great detail and looked at over a series of lessons. A copy of the contract was written on a poster in the class as well. My students knew that technology was a privilege and if you abused a privilege, you no longer got the privilege. Students rarely had access to one another's information and required a login and password. The students were told to keep their passwords confidential to insure the safety of themselves and their work. Their work was constantly being supervised my myself and the students knew they were responsible for whatever was on their screen.
